Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)
The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) was launched on 28th January 2002 with the aim of enabling skilled individuals to come to the UK (or remain in the UK) to seek and take work without the need for a work permit or without having any prior offer of employment.
On 7th November 2006 the Scheme was changed significantly with the main changes being:
- An increase in the number of points required to qualify;
- The introduction of a mandatory English language requirement;
- A decrease in the number of scoring categories; and
- The removal of applications specifically for under and over 28 year olds.
Extensions for HSMP will also be considered under the new arrangements from now on. Where previously there was a need just to show an intention to be economically active in the UK and settle in order to obtain the extension, the new process will require applicants to show that they can attain the required points score, the required level of English language and the intention to work and settle in the UK.
The following pages illustrate the latest HSMP criteria and HSMP scoring.
