Tier 1 – Post-Study Work
The Post-study work category is a points based category that was set up to encourage graduates to pursue a career in the UK.
Post-study work replaced the International Graduate and Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland schemes. This category enables those who have successfully completed and obtained a qualification at the appropriate level at a UK educational institution within the last 12 months to apply for permission to undertake work without the need for sponsorship.
- You do not need to have competed a qualification in a certain discipline in order to qualify;
- Work permission will be granted for two years for successful candidates;
- There is very little restriction to the type of work you can do;
- There is an English language and ‘Maintenance’ requirement in order to qualify. The Maintenance requirement requires the applicant to have evidence of maintaining a certain level of funds to support themselves and any dependants for at least three months prior to submitting their application.
- For those in the UK with student immigration status and meet the required points score, the ability to 'switch' into this scheme without having to leave the UK;
- You can apply for this scheme even if you are overseas as long as you are within one year of successfully completing your course. A visa will be required to re-enter.
Main points:
Before the two year period comes to a close, candidates can switch their status to a longer term work category under Tier 1 or a sponsored category under Tier 2 should they be eligible.
