Maintenance
You must score 10 points in this category by showing that you are able to support yourself while you are in the United Kingdom. To score these points you will need to show that you have maintained at least £800 in savings for the three months prior to the application being submitted. At no point during the three month period should the amount have fallen below £800. If you intend to bring dependants you will need to show you have a further £533 for each dependant.
Those who are to be employed by a Sponsor who holds an ‘A’ rating can show evidence by way of a letter of financial support from their UK sponsor. There is a transitional period running until 27th March 2009 whereby the maintenance requirement need only be shown for the month prior to the application being submitted (rather than three months prior).
English language skills
You must score 10 points in this category by showing that you are able to speak English to a basic standard. This is a mandatory requirement. This will include an ability to understand and use familiar everyday expressions, basic phrases and be able to introduce yourself and others, and be able to answer basic personal questions about yourself.
You will need to show that you are competent in the English language by:
- Passing a test in English equivalent to the appropriate level;
- Having taken a degree taught in English (verified using national academic recognition information centre data);
- Coming from a majority English speaking country: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA.
NB: Intra Company Transferees will only be required to demonstrate the required English language ability if they wish to stay beyond three years
