British Citizenship: Proposed test of language and knowledge of life in the UK
15th June 2005
A Ministerial Statement was published today that proposes new tests to be implemented for those wishing to obtain British citizenship.
In July last year, a requirement came into force for those seeking citizenship to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the English language to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Entry 3 level. New regulations will come into force on a date to be announced later this year for new applicants to be able to demonstrate both knowledge of language and life in the UK.
The tests are to be designed to be taken on a computer, and for convenience, the Government has decided that the successful completion of this test will remove the need for applicants to provide separate evidence of language ability, as it will be set at a level that requires language skills at or above ESOL Entry 3 level.
A separate statement on the implementation of similar tests for those seeking permanent settlement in the UK will be made in due course. For further information, please contact us.
