HSMP 2006 Rule Changes
8th November 2006
On 7th November 2006 the Home Office significantly changed the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). The main changes are as follows:
- An increase in the number of points required to qualify;
- The introduction of a mandatory English language requirement;
- A decrease in the number of scoring categories; and
- The removal of applications specifically for under and over 28 year olds.
Extensions for HSMP will also be considered under the new arrangements from now on. Where previously there was a need just to show an intention to be economically active in the UK and settle in order to obtain the extension, the new process will require applicants to show that they can attain the required points score, the required level of English language and the intention to work and settle in the UK.
The Home Office has suspended the HSMP programme until 5th December in order to incorporate the new changes and any application submitted from now on will be considered under the new arrangements. We strongly discourage anyone from submitting an application prior to 5th December as it will not be processed until after 5th December and will be delayed.
The following pages illustrate the latest HSMP criteria and HSMP scoring.
